The IX. Chapter.

HEare O Israel, This daie shalt thou go ouer Iordane, that thou maiest co¦me in to conquere the nacions, which are greater and mightier then thou,* 1.1 greate cities, walled vp vnto heauen, a greate peo∣ple and of an hye stature, namely the childrē of Enakim, whom thou hast knowne, and of whom thou hast herde saye: Who is able to stonde agaynst the children of Enakim? Therfore shalt thou knowe this daye, that the LORDE y^e God goeth before the, a cō∣sumynge fyre. He shal destroye thē, and shal•• subdue them before the, and shal driue them out, & shortly shall he brynge thē to naught, as the LORDE hath promysed the.

Now whan the LORDE thy God hath expelled them out before the, saye not thou thē in thine hert: The LORDE hath brought me in to take possession of this lande for my¦ne awne righteousnes sake, where as y^e LOR∣DE yet dryueth out the Heithen before the, be¦cause of their vngodlynes.* 1.2

For thou commest not in to take their lon¦de in possession, for thine awne righteousnes sake, and because of thy right hert: but the LORDE dryueth out these Heythen, for their awne vngodlynesse sake, and that he maye perfourme the worde, which the LOR∣DE hath sworne vnto y^e fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Iacob.

Vnderstonde now therfore, that the LOR¦DE [ B] y^e God geueth not the this londe to pos∣sesse it, for thine awne righteousnes sake. For thou art a styffnecked people.

Remembre and forget not, how thou dis∣pleasedest the LORDE thy God in the wil∣dernesse. Sence y^e daye that thou departedst out of the londe of Egipte, tyll ye came vn∣to this place, haue ye bene dishobedient vn∣to the LORDE.

For in Horeb ye angred the LORDE,* 1.3 so that of wrath he wolde haue destroyed you, whan I was gone vp to y^e mount, to recea¦ue the tables of stone, namely the tables of the couenaunt * 1.4 which the LORDE made w^t you, and I abode fortye dayes & fortye nigh¦tes vpon the mount, and ate no bred, & dran¦ke no water: and the LORDE gaue me y^e two tables of stone, wrytten with the fynger of God, and in them was acordinge to all the wordes,* 1.5 which the LORDE sayde vnto you v∣pon the mount out of the fyre, in the daye

of the gatheringe together.

[ C] And after the fortye dayes and fortye nightes,* 1.6 y^e LORDE gaue me y^e two tables of stone, namely y^e tables of the couenaunt, and sayde vnto me:* 1.7 vp, & get y^e downe quyck¦ly from hence, for thy people whom thou broughtest out of Egipte, haue marred thē selues, they are soone gone out of the waye, which I commaunded them, and haue ma∣de them a molten ymage.

And the LORDE saide vnto me: I se this people, that it is a styffnecked people: let me alone, that I maye destroye them, and put out their name from vnder heauē. I wyl ma¦ke of the a people mightier and greater thē this is.

* 1.8And as I turned me, & wente downe frō the mount which brent w^t fyre, & had y^e two tables of the couenaunt in both my hādes, I loked, & beholde, ye had synned agaynst y^e LORDE yo^r God, so y^t ye had made you a mol∣ten calfe, & were soone turned out of y^e waie which the LORDE had commaunded you. Then toke I the two tables, & cast them out of both my handes, & brake thē before you∣re eyes, & I fell before the LORDE * 1.9(euen as at the first tyme) fortye dayes & fortye nigh∣tes, & nether ate bred, ner drāke water, becau¦se of all youre synnes which ye had synned, whan ye dyd soch euell in the sighte of the [ D] LORDE, to prouoke him vnto wrath. For I was afrayed of the wrath and indignacion, wherwith the LORDE was angrie w^t you, euen to haue destroyed you. And the LORDE herde me at that tyme also.* 1.10

Morouer the LORDE was very angrie w^t Aaron, so that he wolde haue destroyed him, but I made intercession for Aaron also at y^e same tyme. As for youre synne (namely, the calfe that ye had made) I toke it,* 1.11 and burnt it with the fyre, and smote it a sunder, & gryn¦de it in peces, euen vnto dust, and cast the dust in to the broke that descended from the mount.

Ye displeased the LORDE also, * 1.12 at Tabe¦ra, * 1.13 and at Massa, * 1.14 and at the lustgraues, * 1.15 and whā he sent you from Cades Barnea, and sayde: Go vp, and conquere the londe which I haue geuen you. And ye were diso¦bedient vnto the mouth of the LORDE you¦re God, and beleued not on him, and herke∣ned not vnto his voyce:* 1.16 for ye haue bene dis¦obediēt vnto the LORDE, as longe as I ha¦ue knowne you.

[ E] Thē fell I before y^e LORDE fortye daies and fortye nightes, which I laye there. For y^e LORDE sayde, he wolde destroye you. But I made intercession vnto the LORDE, and sayde: O LORDE LORDE,* 1.17 destroye not y^e peo¦ple and thine enheritaunce, which thou tho¦row thy greate power hast delyuered, and broughte out of Egipte with a mightie hā¦de. Remembre thy seruauntes Abraham, Isaac and Iacob. Loke not vpon the stub∣burnesse, and vngodlynesse and synne of this people (that the londe wherout thou hast broughte vs, saye not: The LORDE was not able to bringe them in to the lande, that he promysed them, and because he hated them, therfore hath he broughte them out, to des∣troye thē in the wyldernesse:) For they are thy people & thine enheritaunce, which thou hast broughte out w^t thy greate power, and with thy stretched out arme.
