CHAP. XIII.

¶ The fifth Region.

THe fift region is Picene, a Nation in times past most populous, 360000 of the Picentes [unspec C] were reduced vnder the protection of the people of Rome. They are descended from the Sabines, vpon a vow that they made to hold and solemnise a sacred spring. They dwelt by the riuer Aternus, where now is the rerritorie Adrianus, and the Colonie Adria, seuen miles from the sea. There runneth the riuer Vomanum, and there lieth the Praetutiane and Palmensis territorie: also Castrum novum, the riuer Batinum, Truentum with the riuer, the onely relique of the Liburnians remaining in Italy. More riuers there be, to wit, Alpulates, Suinum, and Hel∣uinum, at which the Praetutian country endeth, and the Picentian beginneth. The towne Cu∣pra, a castle of the Firmanes, and aboue it the colony Ascuum, of all Picenum the most renow∣ned. Within standeth Nouana. In the edge or marches without are Cluana, Potentia, and Nu∣mana, [unspec D] built by the Sicilians. Next to those is the colony Ancona, with the promontory Cume∣rum lying hard vnto it, in the very elbow of the edge thereof as it bendeth, being from Garga∣nus 183 miles. Within-forth do inhabit the Auximates, Beregranes, Cingulanes, Cuprenses syrnamed the Mountainers, Falariens, Pausulanes, Pleninenses, Ricinenses, Septempedani, Tol∣lentinates, Triacenses, the city Saluia, and the Tollentines.
