ADesso io vi voglio dire cer∣te belle domande, con le lo∣ro risposte.

NOw wil I tel you certayne fine demaunds, with their answeares.

Certo io vi do troppo fastidio.

Certis I trouble you too much.

Non dite cosi signore.

Say not so sir.

Orsu, ditcmi quale é la piu ve∣chia cosa che sia.

Wel, tel me which is the oldest thing that is.

Veramente io non so, ditemelo per cortesia.

Truely I know not, I pray you tel me.

Iddio è la piu vechia cosa.

God is the oldest thing.

Ma come lo prouate?

But how proue you that?

Perche lui è sempre stato, e mai hebbe principio.

Because he hath alwayes ben, & neuer had beginnyng.

Certo è verissimo.

Certis it is very true.

Quale è la piu bella cosa che sia?

What is the fayrest thyng that is?

Io credo il mondo, perche è opera di Dio.

I beleue it is the world, because it is the handy work of God.

Veramēte voi hauete indouinato

Truely you haue ghest aright.

Quale è la piu gran cosa che sia.

What is the greatest thing that is?

Io credo, luogho.

I thinke, place.

Come lo sapete?

How know you that?

Io lo so, & lo prouero.

I know it, and can prooue it.

Prouatelo, vi prego.

Prooue it, I pray you.

Perche luogho comprehende o∣gni altra cosa che sia al mon∣do, in se.

Because place comprehendeth in it, euery other thing that is in the world.

Certo voi dite la verita.

Certis you say true.

Quale è la piu profitabile cosa?

What is the profitablest thing?

Quello saria bono á sapere, io non lo so, ditemelo.

That were good to be knowen, I know it not, tel it me.

Speranza è la piu profitabil cosa.

Hope is the profitablest thing.

Io non la so intendere, ne anche lo posso credere.

I can not vnderstand it, neither can I beleeue it.

Io ve ne diro la ragione, Quando che ogni cosa è persa, et che nō ci è niente, speranza resta sempre con l'huomo.

I wil tel you the reason, When al things are lost, & that ther is nothing, yet hope resteth al∣wayes with man.

Ma alcuni sperano sempre, & pure sempre sono poueri.

But some do hope alwayes, and yet are euer poore.

Ma se bene sono poueri de beni mondani, con speranza, ti∣more di Dio, e con vita vir∣tuosa, l'huomo puo profitta∣re.

But for all they are poore of worldly goodes, with hope, and the feare of God, and with a vertuous life, a man may profite.

E che cosa profitera con questa speranza?

And what shal he profite with this hope?

Aquistara vita eterna.

He shal gaine life euerlasting.

Pure, che sia cosi.

So that it be so.

Non dubitate.

Doubt not.

Quale è la miglior cosa, che sia al mondo?

What is the best thing that is in the world?

Io credo virtu, perche senza virtu, non si puo far niente, che sia bono.

I beleeue vertue, for without vertue, nothing can be done, that is good.

Voi non hauete errato, ma di∣temi, quale è la piu veloce co∣sa che sia?

You haue not erred: but tel me, what is the swiftest thing that is?

La piu veloce cosa che sia, cre∣do sia l'animo de l'huomo, perche in vn momento strac∣care tutto il mondo intorno, hora é quá, hora é lá, adesso in vn luogho, adesso in vn al∣tro.

The swiftest thing that is, I be∣leeue it be the mynd of man, for in a moment he runneth al the world about, nowe he is here, and now he is there, now in one place, now in an other.

Certo voi dite il vero.

Certis you say true.

Quale é la piu libera cosa che sia?

Which is the freest thing that is?

Io credo, pensiere.

I beleeue, thought.

Cosi é certo.

So it is certaine.

Qual cosa é la piu forte?

What thing is strongest?

Necessita, ouer destino, perche vince ogni altro accidente.

Necessitie, or els destinie, for it ouercommeth al accidentes.

Qual è la piu facile cosa?

What is the easiest thing?

A dar conseglio à altri.

To geue counsel to others.

Qual cosa piu difficile?

What thing more difficult?

A cognoscer se stesso.

A man to know hym selfe.

Qual è la piu sauia?

What is the wisest thing?

Tempo, perche attiene tutte cose, con industria la figliola di tem po: non é cosi?

Tyme, for it attaineth al things, with industrie the daughter of tyme: is it not so?

Certo io mi marauiglio, come sa∣pète questo, perche prociede da vna grande capacita di a∣nimo.

Certis I marueyle howe you knowe this, for it procee∣deth of a great capacitie of mynd.

Ma ditemi anchora vna cosa, che io vi voglio domandare, se potete: Qual è la piu pesante cosa?

But yet tel me also one thing that I wil aske you, if you can, What is the heauyest thing?

Questo velo so dire per esperien∣tia, perche l'ho prouato, la piu greue cosa che sia, credo che sia, è vn Etcetera, perche se la vi piglia per strada, non pote∣te portar la lontano vn passo piu.

That I can tel you by experiēce, for I haue prooued it, the heauiest thing that is, as I beleeue, is one Etcetera, for if it take you by the way, you can not cary it farre, one foot more.

Certo voi hauete colto il chiodo su la testa.

Certis you haue hit the nailc on the head.

Quale è la piu forte cosa de que∣ste tre, ó vino, ó vna donna, ouero la verita? ditemi di gra∣tia.

Which of these three thinges is strongest, either wine, or wo∣men, or els the truth? of cur∣tesie tel me.

A dirui la verita, secondo il mio basso parere, non essendo dot∣do, la verita mi pare, la piu forte.

To tel you the truth, after my foolish opinion, and not be∣ing learned, Truth, me thin∣keth, is strongest.

Cosi credo anche io, perche le al∣tre due si possono vincer legi∣ermente.

So thinke I also, because the o∣ther two may lightly be o∣uercome.
