THe confession of Ausburg.i 1.1 There hath beene great
disputation concerning the authority and power
of Bishops, wherein some haue very ill handled both
the Ecclesiasticall authority, and the temporall power.
From this confusion haue sprung and arisen great
warres and stirres, during the time that the popes rely∣ing
vpon the power of the keyes, haue not onely institu∣ted
a new manner of worship, charging mens consci∣ences
by reseruations of cases, and by violent excom∣munications;
but also they haue attempted to trans∣port
the kingdomes of the world, and to take the Em∣pire
from the Emperours: But good men, and those
that were learned in the Church, haue heretofore re∣proued
these things.
