Of the Formation of Planets.
NATURAL history being our subject, we would willingly dispense with astrono|mical observations. But, as the Earth is so near|ly related to the heavenly bodies, and as obser|vations of this kind illustrate more fully those doc|trines we have already advanced, it is necessary to give some general ideas of the formation, mo|tion, and figure of the earth, and other planets.
The earth is a globe of about 3000 leagues in diameter; it is situated 30 million of leagues from the sun, round which it revolves in 365 days. This annual revolution is the effect of two forces; the one may be considered as an impulse from right to left, or from left to right; the
