HALY STONE,

where Paulinus is said to have converted and baptized many thousands of the Saxons. A small priory for about eight Benedictine Nuns stood here, founded by one of the Humfranvils of Harbottle Castle, by whom it was endowed.* Its revenues were increased by Roger Bertram, Baron of Mitford. The two livings of Carsonside and Harbottle were consolo∣dated by Richard Kelloe, Bishop of Durham, by his deed dated Nono die Februarii Anno Domini 1311, at the desire of Lord Richard Un∣franvill, who entering into holy orders, had the cure thereof. There are no remarkable remains of the priory: at the dissolution the revenue of the house was valued at 11l. 5s. 6d. by Dugdale, and 15l. 10s. 8d. by Speed.
