Terms of Use
Translations of articles and captions of plates (engraved illustrations) are contributed to the site with attribution but without compensation. Translators retain copyright over their work. Many translations are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommerical-NoDerivatives 3.0 license, allowing readers to make certain use of the text without permissions. For permission to reproduce in a way not covered by this license, or for permission to reproduce any translations not covered by this license, please contact the translator directly, or email diderot-info@umich.edu to have your inquiry forwarded to the translator.
However, instead of requesting permission to reproduce, we encourage users to link to the translations online using the durable URL available at the top of each translation. Translations are occasionally corrected or otherwise enhanced, so this URL will always take you to the latest available version. The Collaborative Translation Project is part of the collection of the University of Michigan Library, so it is unlikely to become unavailable anytime in the foreseeable future.
Thumbnails and full-size images of plates are hosted by the ARTFL Project at the University of Chicago, which digitized these from a copy of the Encyclopédie, a work which is in the public domain in the United States. US copyright law does not provide any copyright protection for reproductions of public domain images, so these digitized images are also in the public domain in the US.
