21. François-Séraphin Régnier-Desmarais (1638-1713), known as the Abbé de Régnier, was a French churchman, poet, diplomat, translator, and grammarian. He became the third perpetual secretary of the Académie Française in 1683. Jaucourt refers to his 1705 work, Traité de la grammaire françoise ; The Port-Royal Grammar was published in 1660 by Antoine Arnauld and Claude Lancelot, and argues for the universality of grammar. Charles Pinot Duclos (1704-1722) was a French author and contributor to the Encyclopédie . He became perpetual secretary of the Académie Française in 1755. In the 1754 edition of the Port-Royal Grammar , Duclos added comments, which Jaucourt cites here.
