79. ‘thickness’ not the width of a letter which varies between different characters, but the vertical dimension of the type body parallel to the paper. As the text explains, this dimension determines the spacing between lines of print - provided, of course, the type is ‘set solid’ that is, provided no extra spacing (leading) is inserted by the compositor between each line of type.
