According to the figure legend she is filing the la partie extérieure de la lettre ; The details of her work are not really visible in the plate but she appears to be filing a punch rather than a matrix. I suspect there is no illustration of the filing of the matrix. Indeed, the next sentence would make more sense applied to the punch than to the matrix – though it is certainly necessary to adjust the newly-stamped matrix – a process called justification – not to be confused with the use of the same word in printing!
