well as for all other sessions of the society and suitable efforts appear to have been
made by the Rockford dentists to have the public meeting properly announced by
the newspapers, besides which Dr. Logan and Dr. Bentley in co-operation with
the Rockford dentists, arranged to have about four hundred and fifty people receive two or three personal letters apiece in regard to the meeting. These letters
went to the Board of Education, the principals and teachers in the schools, the
physicians, the clergymen, and the state senators and representatives, perhaps a
few others. Two or three hundred people were present and gave close attention to
everything that was said. It would have been more satisfactory if the hall had
been filled, but when the personnel of the people who were present is considered,
the result must be looked upon as distinctly encouraging.
Whenever it becomes necessary to bring about some increase of knowledge
and of general public intelligence in regard to any matter, whether it relates to
health or politics, it is always necessary to keep the subject constantly reiterated
in speeches and newspapers until it gradually is absorbed in the public mind. In
addition to this and probably most important of all as regards the efforts for more
wholesome living, the control of contagious diseases and the proper care of the
teeth and mouth, it is necessary to get the medical and dental inspection of the
children in all the schools established on a permanent basis and carried out at regular intervals, not too often, nor yet too infrequently. This will require steady
and continuous efforts on the part of the dental profession, and probably in the
end a willingness to give time and service in public and charitable work somewhat
corresponding to the services the medical profession have long been giving in hospitals and infirmaries.
