304 THE DENTAL COSMOS. setting jewels. This is a very delicate and expensive branch of jewelry, and so difficult that the setting of a jewel can seldom be fully relied upon. The inventor first takes a mould in wax of the ornament that is to receive the jewels, then places on it, at the proper points, the jewels, imbedded in the wax to a sufficient depth; the wax model, rendered a conductor of electricity, is placed in the gold solution, and the metal deposited upon it. When the deposit is completed, the jewel is found firmly enchased in the metal, from which, if the process has been properly conducted, it will be impossible for the jewel to escape. The saving of time effected by this process is also very considerable. By the ordinary process, a jeweler can scarcely set 60 jewels in a day, but by the new process, as many as 1500 to 2000." This plan might prove of practical application in the preparation of plates and setting of teeth. PROF. B(ETTGER states (Druggist) that tarnished silver may be readily cleansed and its color restored in an incredibly short period by electrolysis. "To effect this, a saturated solution of borax in water, or a moderately strong solution of caustic potassa, is brought into a state of active ebullition; and with this the discolored object, laid in a zinc sieve-like vessel, is moistened. If a zinc sieve be not at hand, we may attain the same end by touching the object, when it has been dipped in the boiling fluid, with a zinc rod." BIBLIOGRAPHICAL. The Pocket Anatomist, being a Complete Description of the Anatomy of the Human Body, for the use of Students. BY M. W. HILLES, formerly Lecturer on Anatomy and Physiology at the Westminster Hospital School of Medicine, etc. Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakiston, 1860. This is one of those useful little manuals which are so much employed at the present time to facilitate the acquisition, and aid in the retention of a knowledge of important branches of science. It seems to be well adapted to the wants of the student of anatomy. The Physician's Pocket Memorandum for 1861. BY C. H. CLEAVELAND, M.D., Cincinnati. Like other publications of the kind, this work is so arranged as to enable the practicing physician to keep accurate records of professional visits and accounts. It contains a classification of medicines, and affords useful information upon other subjects of interest, which may render its possession more desirable to those who require an aid to memory in the emergencies of practice. American Journal of Indigenous Materia Medica and Repertory of Medical Science. Conducted by B. KEITH, M.D. This is a new monthly of thirty-two pages octavo, ostensibly and chiefly devoted to the cultivation of indigenous materia medica, though its pages are somewhat freely occupied with matter foreign to this subject. The importance of a knowledge of the medicinal plants and materials of this country is, however, so great, that we regard with favor every movement which tends to augment it and further develop our resources for the treatment of disease. As, therefore, special effort in this direction cannot fail to prove useful, by increasing our information upon a very important branch of medical science, every enterprise for such purpose is worthy of commendation and encouragement. This periodical is published by B. Keith & Co., No. 41 Liberty Street, New York, at one dollar per annum.
