312 ERZSEBET SCHAAR: A BRIEF REMINISCENCE thus possible to catch sight of our own fears. Yet this nightmare was presented with consummate nonchalance, even joyously. The remarkable creator of this Szekesfehervar environment, Erzsebet Schaar, did not, however, live to see the fulfillment of her own dream. A year after the stunning success of her exhibition, she took to bed one day, refused food and ceased all communication with friends and relatives. Nevertheless, this overly sensitive woman was apparently not sick at all; she simply lost interest in living. She had said all that was necessary to say. Perhaps so. In any event, news of her death caused a great shock in the wide circle of her friends and admirers. "The city in which I live has recently lost much of its attractiveness for me. Something irretrievable seems to have disappeared." This is what Lajos Nemeth, Professor of art at Budapest University, wrote to me soon after Erzsebet's definitive departure for that Platonic world of mirrors. I understand him well. After her death, I do not quite know why, I too lost interest in Budapest and stopped going there regularly. Translated by Frantisek Galdn
