Acknowledgments

This toolkit represents the work of the CRMS team at the University of Michigan, with funding and support from the Institute for Museum and Library Services in the form of three National Leadership Grants (LG-05-08-0141-08, LG-05-11-0150-11, and LG-05-14-0042-14). We are cognizant of the unique place of the National Leadership Grants and the IMLS’s significant role in stewarding these precious resources for the benefit of the nation and citizenry. The authors would like to express our deep appreciation for the IMLS as well as the University of Michigan Library for the sheer volume of its contribution of staffing, expertise, and hours. We would like to acknowledge the University of Michigan Library and the support of James Hilton, University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, and Donna Hayward, Associate University Librarian for Budget and Planning.

This project benefited from the ingenuity of many people who generously shared time and expertise in an overarching spirit of cooperation. It becomes a challenge to properly recognize all contributors for a project that involved many people over a span of nearly eight years. Over the years, several of the key personnel for CRMS moved from the University of Michigan to new opportunities. Their impact requires particular appreciation. John Wilkin conceived of CRMS and was the principal investigator for the first grant while at the University of Michigan Library as the Associate University Librarian for Library and Information Technology and as the founding Executive Director of HathiTrust. John is now the Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. CRMS is John’s brainchild. Paul Courant, Harold T. Shapiro Professor of Public Policy and Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Economics and School of Information at the University of Michigan, provided key leadership as the Dean of Libraries at the University of Michigan from 2007 to 2013. Anne Karle-Zenith, now Digital Services Manager at METRO New York (the Metropolitan New York Library Council), had significant impact on shaping the structure, workflow, and relationships foundational to CRMS. Bobby Glushko, now head of Scholarly Communications and Copyright at University of Toronto Libraries, also played a vital role in the development of CRMS-World.

The Stanford Copyright Renewal Database, under the initiative of Mimi Calter, Associate University Librarian and Chief of Staff at Stanford University Libraries, closed a critical information gap and thus opened a window of possibility for tackling copyright indeterminacy. Kris Kasianovitz, also of Stanford University Libraries, and Bernadette Bartlett, Library of Michigan, helped shape our work on state government documents. An additional grant from the University of Michigan Library Creative Research fund supports an inquiry into our undetermined category of volumes, currently in process.

We would like to express our appreciation for the ongoing encouragement of a wide range of colleagues who have informally helped us think about copyright issues in the context of CRMS, including Nancy Kopans, Joyce Ray, John Mark Ockerbloom, Elizabeth Townsend Gard, Michael Seadle, Noam Solon, Robert Wolven, and Nancy Weiss. This toolkit benefitted from the careful reading and feedback of Ana Enriquez, Kyle Courtney, Greg Cram, Nazareth Pantaloni III, Laura Quilter, Erin Clements Rushing, Roger Schonfeld, and Hope O’Keeffe. We also want to express our deep appreciation to Allison Peters and Jason Colman from Michigan Publishing for their responsive and professional editorial guidance.

This endeavor would not have been possible without the collective commitment, support, and guidance of both the CRMS Advisory Working Group and the nineteen partner institutions that performed the daily work of CRMS. The commitment of CRMS partners took the form of precious staff time and the tireless dedication of individual reviewers. Projects like CRMS do not happen without enormous commitment—thousands of hours of work and dedicated staff time. The depth and breadth of the CRMS Advisory Working Group’s expertise was crucial for checking our assumptions and shaping our processes; we were overwhelmed by the generosity and dedication of this exceptional group.

These acknowledgements can only partly speak to the foundational importance of shared, collaborative stewardship of the human record embodied in the work we have done through CRMS. In order to realize the potential of our shared collections, we must harness the energies of committed professionals like the ones who have made this endeavor successful.
