147 previously that Dr. Workman was to meet with his advi ory committee in Ann Arbor right after the report, and that committee I believe is listed here, and to reach a decision as to whether we should license or not. They all heard the report at Ann Arbor. They all then met. And it was not necessary to analyze all of the tables. You had two points you needed to know. Was it safe-- was it potent. This you could decide without a detailed analysis of all those tables. It war quite clear, and they could reach a decision in a few ho rs, that the material was safe. There was no production of paralytic polio by the vaccine in the 400,000 children, and it was obvious there was some measure of protection afforded from comparing the placebos with the vaccinated children. These were the two crucial points. DR. SCHEELE: Members of our staff had participated in the checking of the incidence of polio in those who got vaccinated, If they had been aware of any serious problems, I think they would have let us know.
