E... -- IA" SUBJECT: Visit of Dr. Albert B. 8abin re polio eradication Dr. Albert B. Sabin visited Rio de Janeiro between June 25 and July 2. As an official guest of the Ministry of Health and Dean of the Medical School, University of Brazil, he was given an extremely cordial reception. While in Rio he gave daytime as well as evening lectures at the University's Medical School and related departments. On June 29 Dr. Sabin was granted the honorary degree "Honoris Causa" by the University of Brazil. On this occasion Dr. Paulo de Gois of the University's Medical School gave a very thorough and creditable account of Dr. Sabin's successful research on the development of live polio virus vaccine. One day, June 28, was devoted to similar conferences and lectures in Sao Paulo. Brazilian newspapers have already reported that plans are being made for extensive use of the Sabin vaccine and one of the weekly magazines, "Facts and Photographs", of July 8, 1961, carries a feature article comparing the Sabin and Salk vaccines. The article is very outspoken in its praise of the Sabin vaccine and goes on to describe many of its advantages. It can be said without reservation that the free, genial and unassuming manner of Dr. Sabin created an instantaneous liking for him among his Brazilian associates. This reporter also had the opportunity of participating at several social functions as well as official meetings honoring Dr. Sabin. He was willing and cooperative at all times. He would freely answer all questions concerning development of his, vaccine and apparently enjoyed the opporjunity of getting better' acquainted with his Brazilian colleagues.
