HIV Vaccines - Accelerating the Development of Preventive HIV Vaccines for the World: Summary Report and Recommendations of an International Meeting

Preface

This report provides a brief summary of an international meeting convened by the Health Sciences
Division of the Rockefeller Foundation in Bellagio, Italy, March 7 - 11, 1994. The purpose of the
meeting was to investigate the state of progress towards the development of preventive HIV
vaccines appropriate for use in developed and developing countries, and to explore possible
routes for accelerating the development of HIV vaccines. Twenty-four individuals attended the
meeting in their personal capacities, not as representatives of particular institutions. Participants
came from 12 countries and had backgrounds in vaccine development, AIDS research and care,
international health, international finance, pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical industries, and
public-private collaborations. This report reflects the consensus of the meeting, but does not
attempt to represent the views of each of the participants. A draft was circulated to all
participants for comments, however, final responsibility for its contents rests with the writers of the
report, Jane Rowley and Seth Berkley.
