PROD UCTION, ENGINEERING, AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT SECTION The Production, Engineering, and Materials Management Section's Production Standing Committee sponsored a tour of Japanese pharmaceutical facilities in May 1989. The Section also published a Maintenance Training Resource Guide, and worked with the Quality Control Section to develop PMA Guidelines for Vendor Certification Programs. In addition, the Section produced a video-"I Chose Industry"- to use in recruiting pharmacy graduates to work in the pharmaceutical industry. The Section deals with such matters as pharmaceutical production; plant engineering; bulk pharmaceutical chemical manufacturing; plant maintenance; inventory and production planning; materials management; transportation; distribution; safety; environmental control; and plant automation. Executives who specialize in manufacturing, distribution, operations and engineering are members of the Section. PMA STAFF LIAISON PMA BOARD LIAISON Thomas X. White Joseph A. Mollica, Ph.D. Assistant Vice President Manufacturing & Quality Control PUBLIC AFFAIRS SECTION The Public Affairs Section continued working with Communications Division staff to build a strong PMA communications program. The Washington Policymakers advertising series was initiated and the Medicines in Development program was expanded to produce nine surveys, including new surveys of orphan drugs and New Drug Applications pending review at FDA. Cooperative "new medicines in development" projects were conducted with the American Cancer Society, the American Diabetes Association, the Alzheimer's Association, the National Council on the Aging, the Arthritis Foundation and others. The Section conducted two comprehensive reviews of the communications program-an evaluation of current projects and an examination of options for expanding the communications program. At its Annual Meeting in October at Naples, Florida, the Section explored appropriate actions for the pharmaceutical industry with respect to a number of health-care proposals. Section responsibilities include assessment of the public-policy environment of the industry and the development of appropriate responses. The Section oversees development of PMA information programs to communicate with key policymakers and other audiences through media outreach programs, issue advertising and intraindustry communications.
