1990 Annual Report

-1 0 ABOUT PMA ROBERT F. ALLNUTT Executive Vice President The Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association represents more than 100 research-based pharmaceutical companies that discover, develop and produce prescription drugs and biological products in the United States. The Association consists of "members," "associates" and "research affiliates." Member firms produce most of the prescription drugs used in the United States, and about half of the free world's supply of ethical drug products. To qualify for membership, a company must manufacture and market finished-dosage form drugs or vaccines under its own brand names to prevent, cure, treat or diagnose disease. Members must also be significantly involved in researching and developing new therapies or systems of therapy. This research, development, production and marketing must be conducted in the U.S., its territories or its possessions. Associates provide PMA members with supplies, such as bulk chemicals, and packaging materials or services, such as communications materials for the health professions, and contract research. Research Affiliates must conduct, for profit, biological research directly relating to the development of drugs or vaccines and may not be subsidiaries or divisions of-or owned by-a company engaged in the manufacture or marketing of finished dosage form pharmaceutical or biological products. PMA is governed by a 33-member Board of Directors that establishes policies and goals for the Association's Sections and PMA staff. The Board members are executive officers of member firms who are elected for three-year terms and may be re-elected. They are nominated by the Board's Nominating Committee and are elected by the Association's members at its Annual Meeting. In addition to the Nominating Committee, there are 10 other Committees of the Board: the Executive Committee; FDA Issues Committee; Finance Committee; Medical Liaison Committee; Membership Committee; Pharmacy Liaison Committee; Policy Analysis and Planning Committee; Ad Hoc Committee on Medicaid; Ad Hoc Committee on Product Liability; and the Ad Hoc Committee on Trade and Taxes. Committee memberships are listed on page 18. Member company officials participate in PMAs 13 Sections. The Sections identify and study issues, make recommendations to the Board of Directors, and provide guidance to the PMA staff. The Sections are: Biological; Financial; International; Law; Marketing; Medical; Personnel; Production, Engineering, and Materials Management; Public Affairs; Quality Control; Research and Development; State Government Affairs; and Washington Representatives. The principal Association office is in Washington, D.C. PMA also maintains offices in Sacramento, California; Brussels, Belgium; and Tokyo, Japan.
