PMA published 10 Medicines in Development reports in 1989, releasing the results at six press
briefings held jointly with several regulatory, medical and volunteer health agencies and organizations.
Five video and eight audio news releases were produced about the reports, which also formed the basis
for 90 media visits. In addition, more than 250,000 copies of the reports were distributed to the media
and to health-policy leaders. In all, hundreds of news articles and television reports publicized the results
of the surveys.
Last year was the third that PMA has produced a series of surveys on new medicines in development
in key areas of pharmaceutical research. The reports provide concrete evidence of the value and promise
of the enormous investment America's pharmaceutical companies make in research and development.
The following related special projects also were completed during the past year:
* A special supplement on Diabetes Medicines in Development was published in Diabetes Forecast
and Diabetes 90, in cooperation with the American Diabetes Association.
* A special report on Alzheinmers MWedicines in Development was distributed to the Alzheimer's Association membership and supporters, in cooperation with the Association.
* A version of Cancer Medicines in Development was distributed in poster form to 30,000 oncology
health-care professionals, in cooperation with the American Cancer Society.
The Medicines in Development survey reports are updated annually, with the exception of the
AIDS survey, which is conducted twice a year.
