NewIReeas Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Judith Shuler November 4, 1991 (202) 835-3463 AIDS RESEARCH INTENSIFYING: 88 MEDICINES IN TESTING, 14 APPROVED WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Progress in AIDS research is intensifying, with 88 medicines in development -- a 42 percent increase over the number in testing in 1990, according to a new survey released today by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. "This progress is evident both in long-term and short-term comparisons with previous PMA surveys," said PMA President Gerald J. Mossinghoff. Key results of the survey include: o During the past 12 months, 3 medicines for AIDS and AIDS-related conditions have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, bringing the total to 14 in just four years. Another 5 medicines are at FDA awaiting approval. o The number of medicines in development by the research0 __o based pharmaceutical industry has more than tripled L6O _o since 1987, when PMA conducted its first survey on AIDS -_medicines. __ o These medicines are being developed by 64 companies, compared with 40 in 1990. o No vaccines were in testing in 1987; today there are 7.
