[Memorandum to Presidential Advisory Council on HIV and AIDS Research Committee Members from Bruce G. Weniger]
PACHA Research Committee - 17-Jan-97 Conference Call - p. 2 Dr. Moss, of the Immune Response Corporation, is the first informant in our series to request to address the Council, rather than be invited. As his biotechnology company is currently only pursuing a therapeutic vaccine for persons already infected, I explained our focus on preventive vaccines. He promised to provide as much experience and insight into the obstacles and impediments and solutions for that kind of vaccine, and to minimize technical details about the performance of his company's therapeutic product. He also pledged that the opportunity to address the Committee would not be actively announced by his company for public relations purposes. Dr. Moss has provided a written statement to accompany his oral presentation. This is included at the end of the faxed version of this memo. In addition, but not on the call, Professor Raymond E. Spier, submitted to me a written statement and an editorial to add to our collection in the Committee archives. This, too, is attached at the end of this fax. Dr. Spier is the editor of the journal Vaccine, and a professor of microbiology at the University of Surrey, UK. He has experience in virus vaccine production at Merck, Sharpe and Dohme, and since 1973 has been involved in virus vaccine research in the United Kingdom.
