[Memo to PACHA Members from Bruce Weniger]
PACHA Research Committee - 4-Dec-96 Conference Call - p. 2 connect. Again, we have invited several outstanding and accomplished individuals of diverse perspectives and experience who are willing to provide us their candid assessments of the problems and obstacles for rapid development of a successful preventive AIDS vaccine. We have invited them to advocate specific and concrete steps for solutions to overcome these problems that the Council might consider recommending to the President for Administration action. I hope all will keep in mind the need for brevity, directness, and strictness with the time allocations, which contributed to the success of our prior conference-call briefings: 4 April 1996 - Dani Bolognesi (Duke), Mary-Lou Clements (Johns Hopkins), Jos6 Esparza (UNAIDS), Donald Francis (Genentech), Maurice Hilleman (Merck), Margaret Johnston (IAVI), and Jack Killen (NIAID) 24 September 1996 - Chris Collins (UCSF and VACT-UP), Sten Vermund (U Alabama), Peter Piot (UNAIDS), Burt Dorman (Acrogen), and Dino Dina (Chiron-Biocine) 25 October 1996 - Seth Berkley (Rockefeller Foundation), Richard Feachem (World Bank), Larry Brilliant (Seva Foundation), Haynes "Chip" Sheppard (Calif. Health Dept. Virus Lab), Max Essex (Harvard), Jerald Sadoff (Merck Vaccines). If they wish, guest experts are invited to provide written statements or brief documents summarizing, expanding, or supplementing their oral statements. These could be faxed in advance to the Research Committee members (and to Kimberly Farrell, c/o SSS, Inc., 301-652-1749, by 4 pm, Friday, 29 November, for forwarding to other Council members) They may also provide additional biodata, if needed, to supplement the brief sketches I have written below. Otherwise their text or statement might be sent in afterwards for use in preparing the minutes of the meeting. Below please find the schedule for the 90-minute session. Each guest expert is allocated 10 minutes for a statement and 5 minutes for questions and discussion. If
