[Email to Bruce Weniger and Bert Dorman from Carroll Obremskey]
of a HIV/AIDS vaccine a national goal to be accomplished by 2005, the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Jonas Salk's lifesaving polio vaccine. o Similar to the space program, we need a long term commitment of funds, a major public and private sector partnership and strong national leadership on this issue. o Currently only $125 million -- a mere 8% -- of the National Institute of Health's budget for AIDS research is dedicated to vaccine development. More public funding is necessary if we are to achieve our goal of a vaccine by 2005.
