Dear Alexandra,
I got your fax on Monday just as I was leaving for Brazil, and just got back yesterday.
You've put all the important key points into the document for mailing out. Attached are some
suggestions, based principally on the desirability and convenience of getting it all to fit on one
page. I don't think any group is likely to try to actually use our announcement as a
questionnaire to fill out and send in as is, since there's so little space available on it to write
anything. So it doesn't really make sense to maintain the questionnaire format.
I am really concerned about the dangers of your being inundated with paper from this
exercise. Do you have the staff time available to duplicate what might be several hundred pages
of response to this mailing and to FedEx it all promptly to all the Committee members in
advance of December 6? If not, then we run the danger of disappointing and angering the
outside community and public which would expect that their carefully written input would have
been duly reviewed and considered by the full Committee in time for our next meeting.
Moreover, the Research Committee members themselves will expect to see all such materials
submitted to the Committee in advance of the 6th, and not just selected parts of them.
Thus my emphasis in the form on brevity (5 pages per statement) and the suggestion that
the items be faxed to all 7 of us simultaneously, which is not so great a burden to the
submitters. This should ease the burden on you to be faxing or FedExing what could be several
hundred pages to all 7 of us. Patsy Fleming's office can also receive mailed copies for the
official record.
You've taken on a real burden on behalf of all of us on the Research Committee.
