As you may know, the President has created a new Advisory Council on HIV and
AIDS, and I am among just a few named to the panel with any medical or public health
background. One area of my concern and interest is the current status of efforts to develop
vaccines and topical microbicides to help prevent HIV transmission.
I have been consulting with a wide variety of people in private industry, academia, former
and current government service, and the charitable-non-profit sector, for their insights and
wisdom into the basic problems and possible solutions that might be facilitated by leadership in
the Federal government. Don Francis suggested I call you, given some similarities with the
problems faced by the Children's Vaccine Initiative, but I am not sure you received my
message last week on your voicemail at the Carter Center.
David Sencer suggested I fax you at home to ensure reaching you. If you have a
chance to talk, please get in touch with me at my office number (639-6100 or 6113 direct line
if the secretaries are out) or home (634-1089). I leave mid-day Wednesday for Washington,
and we are scheduled to meet and to make some preliminary assessments/recommendations to
the President on Friday morning.
