SUBJECT: Conference Call on AIDS Vaccine Development
Dear Dr. Hilleman:
The ten members constituting the Research Committee of the Presidential Advisory
Council on HIV and AIDS (PACHA) will be focusing on the AIDS vaccine development
effort in a telephone conference call to be scheduled sometime on April 4th or 5th to hear from
and interview invited experts in vaccine development.
Would you be available on those days to brief us for 5-10 minutes on your
perspectives and insights on the AIDS vaccine effort and what ought to be done to overcome
problems and accelerate the development? This would be followed by questions and
discussion. From experience with previous Research Committee face-to-face sessions on other
topics such as microbicides and pediatric research, the most useful approach would be to
describe the overall problems as you see them, and to outline specific proposals to remedy
them that we might consider putting forward to the President for Executive Branch action.
I regret that we cannot guarantee that we would be able to accommodate on this call all
those from whom we would like to hear at this session, and we may have to schedule another
one at a later date. Also, we have never before tried using a telephone conference call to hear
from a half-dozen or so experts, but our limited opportunity for face-to-face sessions requires
this. It will be a bit of an experiment, but we will do our best for this to work smoothly.
Kindly please let me know which times between 9am and 9pm EST you would be
available on April 4 and 5. Once a suitable time is selected for the call, I will provide those
experts whom we can accommodate with a copy of the session schedule and an 800 number
and a code number to punch in to join the call.
