Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, International Issues Subcommittee [Transcript]
27 1 how many different variants of the vaccine are in 2 development? The idea that only one vaccine would be used 3 around the world, that the different clades of the vaccine 4 and the virus require responses like -- 5 DR. MANN: With the chairman's permission, I 6 would like to defer to the expert in my family, my wife, 7 Dr. (inaudible). 8 PARTICIPANT: Well, I think that one of the 9 first questions we have to answer really is -- a clade is a 10 family of viruses that seem to be found nominally in one 11 area of the world or another, and this is one of the first 12 questions you really want to answer with any vaccine. It 13 had to be answered with the polio vaccine, for instance. 14 It was found early in the trials for polio vaccine that you 15 actually needed three types of polio families in the 16 vaccine, 17 So one of the fundamental questions before we 18 can develop a vaccine that would be useful worldwide would 19 be to determine whether one vaccine, like the hepatitis B 20 vaccine, would work for the whole world, or are you going 21 to need a vaccine like rotovirus, where you need four types 22 of vaccines in the same vial. 23 So this is part of the iterative process. We 24 need to ask the question, can one vaccine work against 25 different types of viruses in the community, like we might 26 find in South Africa? Or do you need a vaccine, like the FREILICHER & ASSOCIATES, COURT REPORTERS (301) 881-8132
