15 1 that eminent Nobel laureates are willing to say won't ever 2 work and shouldn't be tried. It's a non-starter to talk 3 about anything related to distribution when the prevailing 4 wisdom which I am repeating is coming from people who have 5 not developed vaccines. 6 A Nobel laureate once gave a wonderful talk in 7 Stockholm at the AIDS conference that year about the 8 fallacy of the Nobel Prize. He basically said that the 9 problem with that kind of prize is that it makes people 10 feel that they're experts in everything. 11 (Laughter.) 12 DR. MANN: I would never take anything away -- 13 I mean, David Baltimore made tremendous contributions to 14 science, but David Baltimore is not equipped to make 15 tremendous contributions to vaccine development. So the 16 point here is we can't get anybody really thinking about 17 distribution and those issues at a time when the prevailing 18 climate is so darn negative, and it's negative because of a 19 few people. There are some people internationally who are 20 actually rather a parallel to David Baltimore and Harold 21 Varmus in this regard. 22 But again, the question I would encourage you 23 to ask anyone who is engaged in the AIDS vaccine effort in 24 various industrialized countries, ask the question, "How 25 many vaccines have you developed?"
