The NCIH blurb and the other journalists in
attendance who are now preparing newsbriefs for
US Medicine, Nature Medicine, and who knows
what else, will get the word out pretty soon to
the scientific and AIDS community.
If your spoken words were based on the script,
I know Jon Cohen, who writes for Science, would
like a copy ([email protected]). If you would
prefer that an intermediary do the passing along of
it to him and other biomedical writers, I would be
happy to do so. An e-mailed version would be far
more convenient than a fax, but a faxed version
would be nice to have, too.
It seems to me what you owe the world now,
having made such a bold criticism in a forum without
the opportunity of response, is a reasoned editorial
commentary in a peer-reviewed scientific journal
(NEJM, Science, etc.), perhaps co-authored
with one or more respected and accomplished
vaccinologists (e.g., Philip K. Russell, and many
others that I'm sure Mary Lou could think of, if not
her herself) and perhaps public health authorities
(e.g., Donald Kennedy).
Perhaps a journal would offer NIH equal time
to respond, which would be fine. Let the reasoned
debate begin. The constituency whose opinions
NIH cares about and responds to the most is not the
general public, but the broad scientific community - the
people who read Science and NEJM.
