"Sandy" Yhurman is responsible for planning and administering all programs and services of the largest and oldest community-based AIDS service organization in the Southeast. With an annual operating budget in excess of $3 million, the agency annually provides social services to more than 3,000 people with HIV disease and reaches approximately 150,000 individuals with HIV prevention and risk-reduction education. The agency also actively advocates at the local, state, and national levels on behalf of people with HIV disease. Ms. Thurman earned her bachelor's degree in Human Resources Administration and Management from Mercer University. She also has extensive training in employment counseling, and working with law offenders. She began her service with AID Atlanta in 1988 as Director of Public Affairs. She brought to the agency a long list of credentials in public service, politics, marketing, and communications. She previously held positions as Account Services Coordinator with PARTNERS Health Plan; Public Affairs Director for AmeriPlan Health Services, the largest HMO in Georgia; and Job Placement and Statistical Analyst with the Georgia Department of Labor, Correctional Services Division. She also spent nine years as a successful special events consultant. A native of Atlanta with a family history of political and public service, Ms. Thurman has remained committed to the cause of people. Her AIDS-related activities include membership on the State AIDS Task Force, the Fulton County HIV Planning Council, and the Executive Committee of the Coalition of Title I Cities (CAEAR Coalition). In addition, she serves on the Governor's Commission on Women and the Advisory Committee for the 1996 Olympics. Ms. Thurman is an accomplished fundraiser having chaired numerous fundraising galas, including Heartstrings, and has served on countless committees. She has served on the Board of Directors of the National Kidney Foundation, the March of Dimes, the Atlanta Ballet Associates, Pets Are Loving Support (P.A.LS.) and SisterLove. She is a graduate of Leadership Atlanta. Ms. Thurman currently consults on a variety of topics, including fundraising and development, managing organizational change and growth, and managing diversity.
