also we're studying patients and by the time we get them they're
passed.. animal models...
we have no idea, even tho many groups are studying pathogenesis now, what is
the first virus...that's the virus we're trying to protect. i can tell you
that virus looks very different from the laboratoy virus...
we're talking about supplemental awards, you have to be creative here about
getting those things moving quickly

there has to b some redunancy but you don't need 20 groups--and i'm just
throwing out an example, i don't mean to pick on anybody--you don't need 20
groups studying tat or rev. you may need 5 groups. earlier on there was a
great emphasis on topics like that whereas we still don't know what type of
viruses exist in genital secretions, it's such a simple thing that perhaps
some of the basic scientists find it too descriptive or simple...
if you were looking at a very restrictive program, let nih do what it does,
would mobio be less important
