[Memo to Gary L. Bauer from Robert W. Sweet]
PhotOCO~~~iC ' at R ld Reaganl Lib3V Phtooie t h R........Y)...I THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON April 27, 1987 MEMORANDUM FOR GARY L. BAUER FROM: ROBERT W. SWEET, SUBJECT: Stirling Colgate Meeting on AIDS Last Friday afternoon, Dr. Stirling Colgate stopped by the office to express his concerns about the government's inaction on the AIDS epidemic. He left me a letter outlining his concerns (see attached). Dr. Colgate is a physicist at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. He continues to confirm the fears of many that the AIDS epidemic is a major threat to public health and national security. He suggested a meeting with the President and a small group of scientists and medical experts to outline their concerns. I think a meeting between the President and some outside experts in the near future would be valuable. Also attached is the Washington Post Magazine story of a 3-year-old victim of AIDS. He received contaminated blood and lived only three years. The cost of his care exceeded $350,000. Here is one of the "victims" whose parents certainly need our compassion. Current estimates project between 3,000 and 10,000 children will be born with incurable AIDS by 1992. Shouldn't we have compassion for these innocent victims??! Attachments 5571095.0487.036
