Attached is a copy of a book supplement by Drs. Alexandra
and Vernon Mark that provides an excellent readable outline of
the problems facing us because of the AIDS epidemic. The entire
paper is excellent. I would particularly call your attention to
the discussion of "safe sex" on pages 20-21.
"The original application of 'safe sex' techniques in
the San Francisco gay community, for example, did
reduce the incidence of rectal gonorrhea by 70% in the
1980-85 time period. However, there was a simultaneous
increase in the incidence of AIDS infection, from 12 to
67% in the same population."
I agree with the authors when they state, "the gurus who
promoted the drug culture and the pied pipers of sex share
responsibility for the outbreak of this terrible plague. We must
limit their influence and reverse their teachings."
A copy of the principles on AIDS education, adopted by the
President, is also attached for your information.
