SENT BY: AmFAR-DC; 1-25-33; 1:56PM; -i 202 224 7676;#11/11 USCHOOL OF MEDICINE Department of Medicine D[)ivision of Infectious Diseases January 20, 1993 Senator Edward M. Kennedy Chairman Committee on Labor and Human Resources 428 Dirksen Senate Office Building Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Senator Kennedy: I am writing to endorse the recommendations prepared by the Treatment Action Group (TAG) regarding the NIH Office of AIDS Research (OAR). As an AIDS researcher and a member of the American Foundation for AIDS Research Scientific Advisory Board, [ feel it is critical that we consolidate our research efforts in a more structured fashion, especially with regard to long-range planning. The change in administration of the Executive Branch should help dramatically in creating a comprehensive, logical, and pro-active approach to dealing with HIV prevention and treatment. At the core of this approach is a coordinated research plan in basic, clinical, and social science. I certainly encourage you to carefully review the recommendations as put forth by the Treatment Action Group. We have a wonderful opportunity to get the AIDS research effort back onto an efficient tract. Please feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions or comments.
