The Potential Use of HIV Vaccines for the Treatment of HIV Infection: Scientific Summary of the State-of-the-Art
viral burden have been observed in the data that have been thus far collected and analyzed. Currently, there are at least 3 ongoing Phase II placebo controlled clinical trials in HIV infected individuals of various products: MicroGeneSys gpl60 LAI strain (600 patients and 280 patients) and Immune Response Corp. (Salk Vaccine) whole virus, envelope depleted (103 patients). In addition, at least 3 Phase II trials are in development: 1 with Genentech gpl20 MN strain (100 patients) and 2 with ImmunoAG gpl60 MN strain (100 patients each). Data from these trials will be essential in order to clearly determine the effect of these vaccine candidates on surrogate markers such as CD4 counts and viral burden. 18
