1 investigators are also doing experiments to maximize
2 the potency of these vaccines by changing the
3 protocols and also looking at combinations. You heard
4 Larry talk about combinations of vaccine that seem
5 particularly promising, vaccine synergy being the
6 bottom line in that regard.
7 The next slide, please. I think one of
8 the most critical issues is the question about how and
9 when to prepare for efficacy trials. The groups here
10 must decide what we should put on the table as far as
11 going into efficacy trials and how to design them and
12 how to prepare for them and when to prepare for them.
13 I think this is one of the more critical
14 groups and, in fact, is the group that I think that
15 eventually will be the beneficiary of all of the
16 results of the prior focus groups that I have
17 indicated.
18 And, finally, for the core group itself,
19 two important issues. One of the first ones to deal
20 with is to try to establish guidelines for selecting
21 and -- next slide, please -- testing vaccines in
22 efficacy trials. What should be the guideposts for
