[Minutes, Advisory Committee to the Director GP-160 Meeting (1992: Bethesda, Maryland)]

92 1 question. You'll see these repeated. In a sense it 2 illustrates how these groups probably will have to 3 interact closely with one another. 4 Now, the next issue, as you well know, are 5 what the immune correlates of protection are. We 6 don't know what they are at the present time. We 7 assume that -- and I've heard it said today that the 8 immunity that is generated against this virus probably 9 does not indicate that there are protective forces in 10 already infected individuals. 11 However, I believe that should be 12 questioned. It should be questioned, in particular, 13 in long-term survivors of HIV infection. Are there 14 immune functions or pseudo immune functions that we 15 should identify in such individuals that might be of 16 benefit in various types of vaccine design? 17 Another is selective activation of certain 18 types of immune responses. You heard someone mention 19 today individuals that are repeatedly exposed to HIV 20 infection and do not seroconvert. Do they have a form 21 of immunity that is protecting them from that type of 22 infection? And if so, what is it? NEAL R. GROSS COURT REPORTERS ND TRANSCRIBERS 1323 RHODE ISLAND AVENUE, N.W.
