[Minutes, Advisory Committee to the Director GP-160 Meeting (1992: Bethesda, Maryland)]

90 1 Now, clearly, the issue also is whether we 2 should aim, our goals should be protection against 3 infection or protection against disease. It's a 4 slightly different question than the first. 5 I believe this is one that has not 6 received enough attention either. Lip service has 7 been made to it, but, certainly, a more detailed 8 analysis of this question is necessary. 9 The one issue that is before us today 10 obviously is the other critical element. Can 11 vaccination after exposure in any way bring benefit in 12 terms of delaying disease or, hopefully, impacting 13 also on transmission? 14 Next slide, please. Variation is an 15 issue, obviously important for this virus. I would 16 say that the key issue here that we need to grapple 17 with is: What is the relationship between sequence 18 variation that many people are involved in putting on 19 the table now and the questions of antigenic 20 variation, the questions of biologic variation, and 21 eventually also the pathogenic subtype that exists in 22 these viruses?
