[Minutes, Advisory Committee to the Director GP-160 Meeting (1992: Bethesda, Maryland)]

89 1 some of the issues that I think are some of these gaps 2 and opportunities. Some of this is conventional 3 wisdom. Some of it may not be. 4 Next slide, please. Now, pathogenesis is 5 very important in infectious diseases and in viral 6 diseases, in particular. I think you all know that 7 most vaccines, most contemporary vaccines, do not 8 completely prevent infection. Rather, they operate at 9 a level post-infection to block the movement of the 10 virus in this particular case to a specific target 11 organ. 12 To date I believe we spend too much time 13 worrying about how to develop vaccines that induce 14 sterilizing immunity against HIV. Is there another 15 step in the pathogenesis of this virus that could be 16 just as good a target as blocking the initial 17 infection? 18 Studies by David Ho, who is here at the 19 table, studies by Dr. Fauci, who is also here, 20 indicate that there might be such steps and that we 21 may be able to capitalize on some of this type of 22 information.
