37 1 Dr. Moskowitz. 2 If you recall when we were deliberating on 3 the NIH strategic plan and talked about vaccine 4 development, it was clear that vaccines lived in a 5 world of science and they lived in a world that was 6 where issues such as pathogenesis, such as immunology, 7 such as virology, were critical components of their 8 development and design. This is very much in the same 9 mold as that. 10 Now, let me go to the next slide, please. 11 The tasks of this working group are as follows: to 12 assess the scientific database that exists now and the 13 current directions that are in place and decide if 14 this is, in fact, the way to proceed. 15 There are clearly many gaps in our 16 scientific knowledge and in vaccine development, in 17 particular, but there are also a number of 18 opportunities. And the questions are how to put these 19 two issues together. 20 The studies that need to be performed 21 combined with the obvious need and so on and so forth 22 require that this working group be involved not only NEAL R.
