1 enormous wealth of information about this virus, about
2 clinical trials, and a variety of other scientific
3 issues and that it may be time to carefully take stock
4 of the information that we have and try to select the
5 best way to proceed from this point.
6 Now, for those of you that have the books,
7 if you will turn to Tab 7, you will see that an HIV
8 development committee met -- I believe it was in
9 September -- and made a recommendation that a working
10 group be assembled to constitute leaders in research,
11 in vaccine development, in clinical trial expertise,
12 and to partner then with NIH, other government agency
13 investigators and administrators and community
14 representatives to critically evaluate this scientific
15 base and determine how, as it says on the slide, a
16 path toward an HIV vaccine can best be forged.
17 Next slide, please. The group is
18 illustrated for you here. It consists of a
19 multi-disciplinary and semipermanent core group, to
20 which a number of interactive focus groups are
21 attached in a flexible and easily managed
