2 own interpretation, of linear epitopes, we lose the
3 confirmational epitopes, and we lose protection. Next

5 So as a sole immunogen for HIV vaccine
6 prophylaxis -- and this is a consensus recommendation
7 of not only me but the four other PIs of the AVEU
8 investigators and the program staff. The AVEU
9 investigators do not feel it should go forward, as
10 neutralizing antibodies produce more consistently at
11 higher titers with other immunogens; the T-Cell
12 responses to gp-160, which I haven't presented in
13 detail, are transient and of low magnitude; and as a
14 sole immunogen, no CD8 positive CTLs are elicited.
15 I did not mention that we were able, after
16 vaccinia priming and boosting, to show CD8 positive
17 CTLs in the combination vaccine approach, and to date
18 this has been the only vaccine approach that has
19 elicited CD8 positive CTLs to HIV-1 envelope in
20 seronegative patients.
21 As a booster antigen after vaccinia
22 priming, it offers potential, but again most boosting
