[Minutes, Advisory Committee to the Director GP-160 Meeting (1992: Bethesda, Maryland)]

1 antibodies that we think are most important in 2 protection of HIV at the moment. One would be 3 neutralization, and the other one would be inhibition 4 of fusion or what has been called here fusion 5 inhibition or sencision inhibition antibodies. 6 In thirty patients receiving 160 microgram 7 doses in four doses of vaccine, the vaccine clearly is 8 immunogenic, and it lists its antibodies by both 9 immunoblot -- that is, the denatured proteins -- and 10 to EIA in which you take HIV infected cells and stick 11 them on a plastic plate, just like we do in the normal 12 diagnostic assay; but neutralizing antibodies induced 13 by this virus are really poor. 14 After the fourth dose of vaccine, 15 everybody has borderline titers of only one to 10 in 16 only fifteen percent of volunteers, and there have 17 been no fusion inhibition antibodies to the 3B strain. 18 This is also all 3B. 19 There have been twenty patients that have 20 gotten a 640 microgram dosage at zero, one, six and 21 twelve months. Neutralizing titers occur slightly 22 higher, 33 percent, again at low titers but again no NEAL R. GROSS COUAT REPORTERS AND TRANSCRIBERS 1323 RHODE ISLAND AVENUE, N.W.
