3 DIRECTOR HEALY: Good afternoon, let's go
4 ahead and get started. I will officially open the
5 meeting and then turn it over to the Co-Chairs, Dr.
6 Tony Fauci and Dr. Chuck Carpenter, who will then
7 proceed to introduce the members of the committee.
8 I first and foremost want to thank you for
9 setting aside your other responsibilities on extremely
10 short notice to participate in this meeting. I have
11 convened this meeting under the authorities of the
12 National Institutes of Health's Advisory Committee to
13 the Director.
14 We have come together today to discuss the
15 mandate that NIH recently received from the Congress
16 to determine the scientific merits of gp-160, a drug
17 that may prove to be effective in treating individuals
18 who are infected with the HIV virus.
19 After I discuss the charge to the NIH, the
20 Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, Dr.
21 David Kessler, will explain his agency's role as
22 mandated by the recently signed Department of Defense
