2 DR. BROWN: I think that is true in many
3 respects, but I think that it's important to point out
4 that we may very well find out by virtue of that
5 information that Dan is going to provide us about the
6 demography of the patient population, that there is
7 greater heterogeneity than we think.
8 CO-CHAIRMAN FAUCI: Right.
9 DR. BROWN: But, on the other hand, trying
10 to present the prospect of participating in the trial
11 to a patient population who are, in fact, at greatest
12 risk, but have limited access and telling them, "Well,
13 we have a lot of scientific questions that are left
14 unanswered," to me is very treacherous grounds,
15 particularly given the fact that there's still a lot
16 of distrust by many communities in this country with
17 respect to HIV clinical trials, not to mention
18 vaccines.
19 DR. STRICKLAND: I would like to voice my
20 concerns in a similar matter. I agree with many
21 points made here, but I also disagree with many points
22 made here.
