3 Finally, should consideration be given to
4 including several promising vaccine candidates --
5 other vaccine candidates -- in a large scale,
6 comparative efficacy trial? Are additional candidates
7 ready for Phase III testing? What wold be the
8 objective, rationale, and optimum design of such a
9 comparative trial?
10 All of these issues for discussion must be
11 driven by the process of objective scientific peer
12 review. In discussing these issues today, please bear
13 in mind the final goal: That NIH provide an
14 appropriate and objective assessment of the scientific
15 merits of this candidate vaccine, gp-160.
16 Also bear in mind the words of Sophocles:
17 "A man who deals in fairness with his own -- He can
18 make manifest justice in the state."
19 Please work today to ensure that what is
20 fair and just is made manifest in Federal support of
