SUBJECT: gpl60 Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome
(AIDS) Vaccine Trial
QUESTION 1: Are the other products to be included
in the Phase III trials ready for such
advanced tests? If not, will the Phase
III trials be delayed while additional
testing is completed on the other
products?
ANSWER: The Army plans to study only gpl60.
The Phase III testing of the gpl60
vaccine will not be delayed while the
safety and efficacy testing of other
products is completed.
QUESTION 2: If multi-product testing increases the
amount of money required to determine
the efficacy of the vaccines, then now
much more funding will be r'equi ed and
how do the researchers plan to obtain
this additional fundinq?

ANSWER:

Subsequent to their November 23, 1992,
meeting, the National Institutes of
Health (NIH) acknowledged that the
cost of a multi-agent study would
substantially exceed the $20 million
appropriation. The Army plans to study
only gpl60 and will not seek additional
funding for a multi-vaccine study.
What if anything has occurred between
the congressional testimony in February
1992 and today which would have changed
the professional opinions of the Army
researchers regarding gpl60?
The professional opinions of Army
researchers regarding the potential
value of vaccine therapy have not
changed.
