Dear Senator Johnston:
This replies to your letter to Secretary Aspin
concerning the progress of the gpl60 Acquired
Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) vaccine trial which
$20 million was appropriated for in the National
Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 1993.
Army researchers, after consultation wiLh the
National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug
Administration, are developing a plan for conducting
Phase III testing of the gp160 AIDS vaccine. The
United States Army Medical Research and Development
Command, as lead agency for Department of Defense AIDS
research, is currently conducting a cost analysis for a
Phase III trial of the gpl60 vaccine. Upon completion
of this cost analysis, a request for proposals will be
issued and a contract awarded Luto conduct Phase III
testing. It is unlikely that a $20 million budget
will allow additional products to be evaluaLed.
