Statement of Charles N. Oster, M.D.
At the conclusion of our discussion, I took COL Dangerfield to Ward 11 and introduced him to Dr. Jeff Lennox, the new director of Clinical Research and the study nurses. Dr. Nzera Verani ran the vaccine studies until she resigned in August 91; following that the M.D.'s in LTC Redfield's laboratory took turns coming here to perform doctor functions on study patients. As a result of this, I went out of the loop. Dr. Lennox came in July 1992 to be in charge of HIV clinical research. During the visit, COL Dangerfield was told that none of the 30 patients in the Phase I original study were receiving AZT but in the rollover phase six or seven had been placed on AZT because of medical indications. 3
